Play Santa for the Animals, Saturday, December 13, 2008

Santa Claus is coming to town, and you can help make sure he includes homeless and abandoned animals on his list this year.

The Vancouver BC SPCA branch invites members of the public to drop off toys and quality food for the animals during its annual holiday Toy Drive on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1205 East 7th Ave. Each year the BC SPCA provides shelter and veterinary care for more than 41,000 abused, neglected, injured and homeless animals.

“Shelter animals can develop depression from loneliness and boredom. Toys very much help stimulate the mind and provide moments of joy and comfort,” says Rhonda Sherwood, a volunteer at the Vancouver SPCA branch. The branch’s wish list includes balls, Frisbees, squeakers and Kongs for dogs; cat perches, scratching posts, sponge balls and toy mice for cats; and chew toys for bunnies and other small animals. The shelter also needs quality food and treats, collars and leashes, blankets and bedding, towels and small-animal cages.
“We welcome items for all types of animals in our care, including dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils and hamsters, guinea pigs and birds,” says Sherwood.

Members of the public can drop off toys and other items any time between now and Christmas at the SPCA’s Vancouver Branch. But those who come during the Toy Drive on Dec. 13th are encouraged to stay for a pancake brunch (by donation), take a tour of the shelter and join in the special activities planned for children and adults.
